Following its bestselling edition of Bradshaw's Handbook 1863, Old House brings you this fascinating guide to Europe's rail network on the very brink of the First World War. Published in 1913, it is divided into three sections: timetables for services covering the continent, short guides to each city and notable destination and features, and a wealth of advertisements and ephemeral materials concerning hotels, restaurants and services that might be required by the early twentieth century traveller by rail.

It affords a fascinating glimpse of fin de siecle Europe and of a transport network that was shortly to be devastated by the greatest war the world had ever seen.

About the Author

George Bradshaw became famous for producing the world's most successful and longest running combined railway timetable a publication to be found in the library of every Victorian traveller. But in the middle of the 19th century, with the railway network reaching its peak, his company shifted focus to tourist guides, such as this one, designed for the rail traveller.

Rail travel the old way

The book has been used on one European rail journey so far and although the content is from the early part of last century, you would be surprised how much is unchanged - it is Europe after all!

Impressive (but hardly portable)

In a nod to Michael Portillo's wonderful series, this was purchased for a loved one who adored the series. Whilst we both love the book, it was about double the thickness we'd expected - so it probably WON'T come travelling with us - which is a pity because I suspect it would've been a great alternate guide.

A piece of history of Pre WW I Europe

What I wasn't expecting, though this is not anyone's fault but mine, is that more than 50% of the book is taken up with timetables. Now that may have been very relevant to readers in 1913, but I'd say with confidence that they are no longer up-to-date.

My home is Germany and i enjoy watching the Continental Railway Journey Series. I do a lot of Traveling through Europe and this book gives me and insight of what it was like to Travel through Europe in 1913 two years before the First World War. Interesting to see how things have changed since then.
